How Trees Fit into Wildfire Risk Reduction
Aspen’s wildfire mitigation approach focuses on strategic, site-specific vegetation management. The goal is to reduce risk while maintaining the ecosystem services and community wellness benefits that trees provide.
When Tree Removal Is Part of Wildfire Mitigation
In some cases, removing trees is an appropriate and necessary wildfire mitigation tool, particularly where trees are dead, stressed, poorly located, or contributing to hazardous fuel continuity near structures. These decisions are guided by Aspen's Wildfire Mitigation Policy.
City Resources
Aspen provides several tools to help property owners understand wildfire risk and make informed decisions about trees on their property:
- Wildfire Mitigation Policy (2024): Outlines when tree removal may be appropriate for wildfire risk reduction and how those removals are evaluated. Updated policy expected in 2026. The City currently uses the Wildfire Mitigation Matrix to assess tree removals in different wildfire classification zones.
- Tree Assessment & Valuation Framework: Explains how tree condition, risk, and value are assessed, including when mitigation fees may be reduced or waived for qualifying wildfire mitigation activities.
- Tree Removal Permits & Guidance: Provides clear information on when permits are required and how to avoid unintentional tree damage during construction or mitigation work.
- Ignition-Resistant Tree Species Guide:Identifies tree species and planting characteristics that may reduce ignition risk when properly placed and maintained, helping property owners make informed choices that support wildfire mitigation while retaining healthy trees.
