Natural Resources

Aspen boasts many outstanding natural resources including having the premier high-altitude community forest in Colorado. The City of Aspen has established a dynamic natural resource program that encompasses both the urban forest and the surrounding natural resources, earning it the distinct designation of being a Tree City USA through the International Society of Arboriculture, holding a Sustainable Communities Certification through the Audibon Society, and being accredited by the Society of Municipal Arborists.

Forestry

Aspen is home to one of Colorado’s premier high-altitude community forests. The City of Aspen’s Forestry Program manages and protects this living resource through proactive care, science-based planning, and collaboration across city departments.

Wildlife

Noxious Vegetation Management

Noxious species threaten native plant communities, willife habitat, and ecosystem health by outcompeting native vegetation and altering soild and water conditions. The City actively managed noxious species through early detection, targeted treatment, habitat restoration, and coordination with regional partners. Water Efficient Landscaping

Water-efficient landscaping supports healthy ecosystems while reducing water use. In 2017, Aspen City Council adopted the Water Efficient Landscaping Standards to promote sustainable landscape design, appropriate plant selection, and efficient irrigation practices. These standards apply to new development and certain landscape renovations and are an important tool for conserving water while maintaining functional and attractive landscapes.
