Outside in Aspen Triathlon/Duathlon

Outside in Aspen Triathlon/Duathlon/Aquabike | June 9, 2012
800-yard indoor pool swim | 17-Mile bike (gaining 1,500 feet in elevation) | 4-mile run

This is the perfect triathlon for beginner triathletes looking for a unique challenge and seasoned racers wanting to compete on a short, but challenging course.The triathlon is a USAT sanctioned event. The state-of-the-art Aspen Recreation Center will act as the start, finish, and transition area for the race. Please join us for this exceptional event!

Triathlon - First Swim heat starts at  7:00am
Swimming, Biking, Running
The pool swim will consist of 32 lengths in a 25 yard pool. This 800-yard swim will be in the Aspen Recreation Center. There are 6 lanes and 4 participants per lane. The heats will be broken into 20 minutes. The bike course will begin at the Aspen Recreation Center and is approximately 17 miles and 1500 vertical feet up to the beautiful Maroon Bells. The bike course is open to traffic, helmets are required! The run course begins at the Aspen Recreation Center and goes down a paved trail around the Aspen Golf Club for 4 miles returning to the Aspen Recreation Center.

Duathlon - Run/Bike/Run, starts at 7:10am
The Aspen Duathlon starts with a 2 mile run on a paved path and dirt trail. The bike course will begin at the Aspen Recreation Center and is approximately 17 miles and 1500 vertical feet up to the beautiful Maroon Bells. The bike course is open to traffic, helmets are required! The run course begins at the Aspen Recreation Center and goes down a paved trail around the Aspen Golf Club for 4 miles returning to the Aspen Recreation Center.

Duathlon
- AquaBike (participants start with the swim and are seeded by their estimated swim time for 800 yards)
The Duathlon Swim/Bike starts with an 800 yard swim and 17 mile bike as described as above. All swimmers will be seeded based on approximate swim time for 800 yards.

Outside Challenge – Join a team of Outside editors to train and compete in the Outside In Aspen Triathlon. Online training programs offer three custom plans (First-Timer, the Serious Competitor, or the Busy Man) so individuals at any level of fitness—and under any time constraint—can successfully complete the event. The plans were developed by Purplepatch Fitness’s Matt Dixon, a leading triathlon trainer in the United States and coach of top pro Chris Lieto. Participants will have access to an online forum where they can share training successes and challenges and glean tips from editors who will be competing in the same event. The plans also include workout-tracking features from Training Peaks, live video workout sessions at Outside Online, and training videos from coach Dixon—all to support you as you work toward your goal of competing in the Outside In Aspen Triathlon. You’ll also receive an invitation to a special VIP reception with Outside editors and pro athletes on the Friday evening before the event, plus exclusive access to a special Outside Recovery Lounge on race-day. Race Cost
This is a USA Triathlon sanctioned event. All participants must be annual members or purchase a single day event permit. If you would like to become an annual member, please contact USA Triathlon (1-719-597-9090). If you are not a member of USA Triathlon, a single event permit must be included with race entry fees. ($10 per person, $5 for 17 and under).

Directions & Parking


From Aspen:

Go around the roundabout and take your second right. You will see signs for Highlands Village and Maroon Bells. Follow the road past the schools on your left and the Aspen Recreational Center is on your right. 

From Downvalley/Highway 82:
Go around the roundabout and take your first right. You will see signs for the Highlands Village and Maroon Bells. Follow the road past the schools on your left and the Aspen Recreational Center on your right.

Parking is not available at the Aspen Recreation Center or along Maroon Creek Road. Parking is available at the Aspen School District. Take your first left on Maroon Creek Road into the Aspen Middle School parking lot. There is a pedestrian bridge behind the middle school crossing Maroon Creek Road that will take you directly into the staging/transition area of the Aspen Recreation Center. Parking Map

Packet Pick-up - will be held at the Aspen Recreation Center on Friday, June 8 from 4-7pm.

Seeding - participants will be seeded based on swim times (Triathlon/Aquabike only) received by the June 7 deadline. Entries received after this date will be seeded randomly.

Transition Area - Your equipment must be checked into the transition area 30 minutes prior to your start time. Transition area is assigned by bib numbers. Map

Relay Teams - relay teams may compete in the following 3 divisions: Men, Women, Coed. Awards will be given to the top male, female, and co-ed team. Teams will be sharing the same bib # and timing chip. Each team member will need to fill out a City of Aspen and USAT triathlon waiver at packet-pick up.

Aid Stations
Bike Course - No aid station
Run Course (2 mile run) - No aid station
Run Course (4 mile run) - Mile 1 & 3 | Water & HEED, Mile 2 | Water Only
Finish Line - water, HEED, small snacks. Lunch will be served after you finish.

Road Bikes can be rented in advance by making a reservation at Aspen Velo Bike Shop, and mentioning Outside in Aspen in the comments section. Outside in Aspen participants will receive a 20% discount on bike rentals



Training

Triathlons for the first timers Have you always wanted to try the multi-sport but are unsure of what you need to do for training and gear? The Triathlon class at the Aspen Recreation Center is for you.  Wednesday mornings from 7:30-8:30am we will get you the knowledge and give you some workouts and technique tips to get you on your way.  We will help set your goals and get you triathlon ready. Cost:  Admission plus $3.50.

Aspen Tri Club The Aspen Triathlon Club serves multisport athletes of all ages and abilities in and around the Roaring Fork Valley, enabling them to achieve their athletic goals in a stimulating, supportive and sociable environment.
