Family FUN Day | FREE!

Come celebrate a FREE and FUN day at the Aspen Recreation Center brought to you by the City of Aspen and KSPN. Sponsored by Aspen Youth Center, Buddy Program, Aspen Community Foundation, Kids First and Pitkin County Health & Human Services.

Saturday, April 28 from 11-3pm | FREE!

Come swim, skate, climb and play! Bounce houses will be set up, face painting, guitar and karate demonstrations, Hula Hoop Fun with Betty Hoops, hockey tips, Fire Department Demonstration, registration for the Lemonade Day on June 30 and more!

NRC Broadcasting (KSPN) will be live all day with free giveaways from 11-3pm.

Western Slope Bouldering Series

Aspen, CO- November 16, 2011 – The Western Slope Bouldering Series (WSBS) is a grassroots series of bouldering competitions for community fun throughout western Colorado. We have six different locations that began in October and will continue through April.

The WSBS has four levels of difficulty of each competition – Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Open for ages 8 and up.

Cost is just $15 per person and includes a raffle for prizes.

Santa is Coming to the Aspen Recreation Center

Every Holiday season Santa Claus is an extremely popular guy and you and your family are invited to visit him at the Aspen Recreation Center’s annual “Visit with Santa” day at the Aspen Recreation Center. This event is held on Saturday, December 17 from 3-6pm. Admission is free to see Santa.

The day will be complete with photos with Santa, cookie decorating, live music, hot cocoa and as always – 100% pure fun!

Time for the Community Picnic – September 11

Free food, miniature golf, fishing in the pond, kite flying, tennis, music! Sound like fun?

Then head on out to the Aspen Golf Club on Sunday, September 11 from 11am-2pm for the Annual City of Aspen Community Picnic. This fun filled event will start at 11am with a BBQ style lunch for the first 750 people provided by Red Mountain Grill.

Then at 1:45pm head on over to the driving range to the 3rd Annual Mow Down Pollution race/ Sign up to compete in head to head competition to see who can mow their grass patch the fastest. All participants in the race will be entered into a drawing to win a push reel mower. Sign up to compete at the picnic.

Don’t forget to go car free and walk, ride, bus or carpool to the event. There is no parking available at the golf course or on Cemetery Lane. Park at the Aspen Middle School and take the RFTA shuttle on the  :00 and :30 after each hour from Aspen Middle School to the golf course. Shuttle service beings at 10:30am. Shuttle returns on the :15 and :45 after each hour from the golf course beginning at 10:45am. Service will run from 10:30am to 2:30pm.

Inaugural Aspen Backcountry Marathon a Success

Thank you, Aspen, for a truly one-of-a-kind event! Nearly 250 participants participated in the inaugural Aspen Backcountry Marathon on Saturday, Aug. 27.

We are so fortunate for all of our volunteers who helped mark the course and kept participants safe, hydrated, motivated and timed. We thank Pitkin County and the U.S. Forest Service for allowing us to showcase all of the beauty and glory that the White River Forest has to offer, the Aspen Police Community Safety officers, and all who helped make this such a great event.

A thank you goes out to our Aspen Backcountry Marathon committee members and a special thanks to Austin Weiss, Jeff Alden, Steve Szoradi and Mike Trecker.

The Aspen Backcountry Marathon would like to thank our sponsors: Hammer Nutrition, Aspen Alpine Guides, Ricky’s Lucky Nuts, Hit the Ground Running, Marmot and the U.S. Forest Service.

Aspen Backcountry Marathon | August 27

For many this will be the most challenging marathon they have “never” run. Why? Because it’s NEW! The inaugural Aspen Backcountry Marathon will be making its debut on August 27, 2011 and will showcase some of Aspen’s most coveted trails while challenging even the well trained athletes.

“Aspen has great triathlons, half marathons, and 5ks,” said Special Events Coordinator Sandra Doebler. “but the one race we were missing was a full marathon.” And this marathon is no exception. This scenic and anything but flat course (over 4000 feet in elevation gain!) gives runners a taste of the mountains and showcases the spectacular scenery of Aspen.

Marathon Route:

  • Start & finish in downtown Aspen @ Wagner Park
  • From Wagner Park, up Smuggler Mountain to the intersection next to the Smuggler Overlook
  • Up Smuggler Loop Trail to the Lollipop Trail
  • Lollipop Trail to the Lollipop Cut-off Trail
  • Back down to the Hunter Creek Connector Trail to the Iowa Shaft Trail
  • Iowa Shat Trail down to the Hunter Creek Valley floor, turn left and head back downvalley on the south side of Hunter Creek to the 10th Mountain Bridge
  • Head across the 10th Mtn. Bridge to the north side of the creek and head up valley past the ghost town to the Sunnyside / Plunge Trail
  • Head up the Sunnyside / Plunge Trail to the Hunter Creek Rd., turn right.
  • Bear right at the first “y” intersection towards Van Horn Park
  • After ¼ mile, bear right onto the Hunter Creek Rim single track trail
  • Turn left, up into Van Horn Park once the Hunter Creek Rim Trail intersects with dirt road
  • At the high point in Van Horn Park, turn right and follow the Hobbit Trail to 4 Corners
  • Run straight through 4 Corners to the Sunnyside Trail, follow the Sunnyside Trail to the Rio Grande Trail and Stein Park
  • Up Cemetery Lane, around the Aspen Golf Course via Homestake Road
  • Down into the Maroon Creek Valley and underneath the Maroon Creek / Highway 82 Bridge and across the Bob Helm Bridge
  • Climb out of the Maroon Creek Valley underneath the Terral / Wade Bridge to Tiehack
  • Turn left on the Government Trail and follow the Govt. Trail up Buttermilk the Summer Road on Main Buttermilk
  • Turn right and drop back down the Summer Rd. to the Oregon Trail and back down to the base of Tiehack
  • Cross the Terral / Wade Bridge and turn right on singletrack onto the Moore Open Space
  • Cross the Maroon Creek Pedestrian Bridge, around the Aspen Chapel to the Marolt Open Space
  • Cross the Marolt Open Space, past the Community Garden to the Marolt Pedestrian Bridge to W. Hopkins Ave.
  • Turn right on W. Hopkins Avenue to the Midland Trail
  • Take the Midland Trail Into Koch Lumber Park.
  • Turn right on the Ajax Trail
  • Follow the Ajax Trail across Aspen Mountain to Ute Avenue
  • Turn left on Ute Avenue back into downtown Aspen to Wagner Park to the finish

Just “Tri” It

The 18th Annual Aspen Triathlon/Duathlon is set to take place at an earlier date this summer on June 11 in Aspen, Colorado with the Aspen Recreation Center serving as the event site.

The new June date (originally held in August) also allows the event to coincide with the annual Outside in Aspen, an adventure filled weekend with outfitter-led adventure including mountain & road biking, fly-fishing, kayaking, rafting, trail running, hiking, rock climbing and stand-up river paddling for all skill levels.

The triathlon will begin at the Aspen Recreation Center and will include an 800-yard indoor pool swim, 17-mile bike up to the spectacular Maroon Bells gaining 1,500 feet in elevation, and conclude with a 4-mile run in the Elm Mountain range and scenic Maroon Creek Valley. Also available is a Run/Bike/Run Duathlon and Swim/Bike Duathlon.

This is the perfect triathlon for beginner triathletes looking for a unique challenge and seasoned racers wanting to compete on a short, but challenging course. The race is sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the sport of triathlon’s national governing body.

Costs for USAT members are $60 triathlon, $80 for triathlon relay, $50 duathlon/aquabike, and $60 for duathlon relays. Non-USAT members can purchase a 1-day USAT license to compete for $10.

Bring out the bikes…time for the Aspen Cycling Festival

Just days into May it’s time to get out the bikes and get ready for Aspen’s unofficial kick-off to the cycling season – the Aspen Cycling Festival. Held May 20-22, the Aspen Cycling Festival features two classic cycling races – the Ride for the Pass and Aspen Criterium and a LIVESTRONG Friday night kick-off party and concert.

Join LIVESTRONG in kicking off the weekend on Friday night, May 20 for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a concert at Belly-Up and a chance to win exclusive Lance Armstrong signed items. Tickets are available for purchase online.

Ride for the Pass, on May 21, allows racers to go where no car has gone before – or at least since last fall. This charity bike race/recreational ride allow racers to experience riding this stunningly scenic route up Independence Pass free of motorized vehicles before it opens on Memorial Day. Benefitting the Independence Pass Foundation, the race follows the traditional route from the Winter Gate, 4 miles east of Aspen to the Independence Ghost Town approximately 10 miles east up Highway 82 on Independence Pass gaining approximately 2,500 feet of elevation.

The Aspen Criterium, taking place on May 22, begins and finishes in the heart of downtown Aspen with racers competing for over $8000 in prize money. This 0.9 mile loop takes riders on the closed city streets of downtown Aspen. Typical criteriums feature a 4 corner race, but the Aspen Criterium boasts 10 corners making the race even more exciting to both racers and spectators!

For anyone wanting to try a criterium race Sun Dog Athletics will host a criterium clinic race morning (May 22) from 7:15-7:45am for just $10. Participants will learn new skills to enhance performance and enjoyment.

· Crossing the Tiehack bridge and onto the Moore Open Space

· Cross the Marolt Bridge and down Hopkins Avenue

· Into Koch Lumber Park via the Midland Trail

· Cross Aspen Mountain via the AJAX Trail

· AJAX Trail to Ute Avenue
