The Aspen Parks Department is sponsoring its annual Skateboard Park Extravaganza tomorrow (August 6) from 10am to 5pm at the Rio Grande Skate Park. The event features a skateboard park clean-up from 10am-Noon and a skateboard park competition from Noon-5pm. The cost to enter the competition is FREE if you help with the clean-up or $20 otherwise. City of Aspen Parks will provide pizza for the clean-up helpers.

Owl Creek Chase – Registration Now OpenMonday, January 10th, 2011Register now for the 2011 Owl Creek Chase 21k Nordic Ski Race held on Sunday, February 13 at 11am. The Owl Creek Chase has been one of Colorado’s premier cross-country ski races since 1985. The challenging course from Snowmass Village to Aspen presents the very best that Colorado skiing has to offer; tough climbs, scenic views, thrilling descents and excellent snow conditions. The Owl Creek Chase was started as a means to showcase the outstanding trails in the Aspen/Snowmass area and the Owl Creek Trail is the crown jewel of over 90km of free skiing often referred to as Aspen’s 5th mountain. The maintenance of the vast free network of trails is shared by a number of entities including the towns of Aspen and Snowmass Village as well as Pitkin County and the Aspen/Snowmass Nordic Council. The Aspen Snowmass Nordic Trail System offers trail users over 90 kilometers of free cross country ski and snowshoe trails, connecting the communities of Aspen, Snowmass and Basalt. The trail system even have two full service cross country centers in both Snowmass and Aspen. Sounds too good to be true, huh? The Aspen Recreation Center’s Winter Wonderland features all these great outdoor activities that are perfect for après or just an afternoon family outing. Take a ride on the “Whoa Nelly” Sledding Hill. Grab your friends and hang on to your hats! See who can race down the hill first – winner carries the other sled back up the hill. Whether you have fresh new snow or are sledding down the dips and jumps created by other sled goers you’re going to have fun. Sled rentals are available inside the Aspen Recreation Center for $5 or bring your own and sled for FREE! After you’ve finished your ride down the sledding hill strap on your skates and try out the new outdoor skating pond – the ARC-tic Pond. During dusk the lights turn on and the twinkling trees help give it that magical, nighttime ambiance. You’re not done yet! If you couldn’t fit in all in for one day – come back the next and test out your cross-country skiing or snowshoes skills. With 3 new trails that take you around the Aspen Recreation Center it’s the perfect way to spend Aspen’s blue bird days outdoors. If you’re looking for a more athletic endeavor take a look at the cross-country map that boasts over 90 kilometers of trails from Snowmass to Aspen. |
