1st Annual Aspen Bonspiel

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

The Aspen Curling Club is fully engaged in “throwing rocks at houses” and would like to invite you to visit us to find out more about Aspen’s hidden winter sport.  (Curling in Aspen began in the 1960’s with such notables as Tom Moore among the pioneers.)  Currently in our third year of league play, the Curling Club has ten teams that meet for play every Wednesday at the Ice Garden.  There are approximately 50 people involved in teams with a good two dozen that show up to cheer on their favorites.  (It’s a rowdy bunch. )

This is the only sport we know where tradition requires the winners to buy the beer.  And photo ops abound. (Have you seen the Norwegian Men’s pants?)  Teams are “mixed” with men and women making up the teams.  We have a City Councilor, bank presidents and vice-presidents, accountants, bartenders, music school staff and faculty, waiters, snowboarders, carpenters, policemen, retirees, concierge, appraisers, doctors, lawyers, high-end retail managers,…basically – a terrific cross-section of the community in league.  (And the highest concentration of mid-western refugees to be found in the valley, eh?)

The City of Aspen and Aspen Curling Club are excited to announce and play host to the First Annual Aspen Bonspiel. Eighteen teams over three days will play in traditional format at the Ice Garden.  We already have teams from North and South Dakota, Wisconsin and the front range likely to compete. The date is tentatively set for October 15-17.
